Rodents are Mammals that have unique jaws designed for gnawing. They consist of 40% of all mammalian species. They evolved about 65 million years ago, shortly after the Dinosaurs died out.


  • The largest rodent is the capybara.
  • Rodents include rats, squirrels, hamsters, mice, and beavers. They all have a jaw designed for gnawing through plants and flesh.
  • There are a total of about 2,300 species of rodents.
  • The smallest rodent, at about 1 inch or so, is the African Pygmy Mouse.
